I’m a mid-life career changer, and I joined the MAT@USC program with the May 2010 Cohort. I received my undergraduate degree in Communications in1982 from Bridgewater State College in Massachusetts. I worked for a while in marketing for the professional theatre and finally settled into a career in magazine publishing as an editor, writer and publisher. During that time I have also been (and still am) a songwriter and performing musician, though anyone older than 40 or so will know why I have to perform under a different name. I live in rural Vermont, and I am fascinated at how so many of the issues confronted by urban schools are the same ones we see in rural schools. I have two kids (a boy, 15 and a girl, 12), and my wife works with children with special needs in our local school. I have to admit that returning to school after so many years is a bit intimidating, but the material is fascinating and the goals of the Rossier School of Education and the MAT@USC are nothing short of groundbreaking. They’re out to change the face of American education. I like that! I was a little surprised but very honored to be chosen to participate in the MAT@USC, and I’m proud that I now get to call myself a Trojan. Fight On!

A Good-Bye to Guided Practice Students

The last unit I taught in my last week of Guided Practice was on poetry. I wrote this poem to share with my students.

I did not have enough time to teach you everything I want to teach you.
And, to tell the truth, I really don’t know how …

I’ve just finished the first 10-week semester of the MAT, and my head is spinning – in a good way. If you’re in the next cohort and about to start …

Hot Fun in the Summertime

While many of you are on the beach, sipping something cool from a big glass with lots of fruit hanging off of it, I and many others are taking one or more classes.

The Framing Experience

I have a feeling The Framing Experience serves another, covert purpose in the MAT@USC curriculum. I have no proof of this, but I suspect this course is partially meant to weed out people who aren’t serious about the program. Getting through the MAT@USC in one year is no small accomplishment. If you think you’ll be able to breeze through it, guess again.

Getting Into the Game

If I want to see changes in our schools, it’s time for me to work from the inside to affect those changes.
