January 2011 I decided to start the year off like many others do, by setting New Year’s Resolutions. Some of these included getting ‘A’ grades, learning to cook and to get in shape by my 24th birthday. The latter resolution would be more difficult than I thought being a full time student, student teacher and maintaining personal relationships, but I was determined to make it work.
I started the year off strong, joining a local gym, working out with a friend and making healthy food choices. In my “free time” if I wasn’t studying, I was taking full advantage of my gym membership or jogging at the beach. This would be a piece of cake or so I thought!
As the year progressed I became consumed with lesson planning, recording teaching videos and attending classes. It also seemed as if everyone in my life decided to get married, celebrate a birthday or have another major event that I needed to attend. Exercise took a back seat on my to do list for a while, but as my June birthday crept up I again made exercise and healthy eating a priority.
Well June has arrived and as I await my 24th birthday at the end of this month I am 20 pounds lighter and that much healthier!
In a 10-week program like MAT@USC balance is key! Without balance there was no way I was going to fulfill my many resolutions. By making my health a priority I proved to be a more energized, creative and enjoyable teacher and student. By taking care of myself I was able to bring the best of me into the classroom. So future teachers out there make “you” time whether it’s exercising, reading or spending time with friends & family stay emotionally fit!
