Hello from Puerto Rico! My name is Cristina Castillo, and I began the MAT in the January 2010 Cohort. As the newest addition to the student blogger family, I’d like to introduce myself and offer some context about my experience as a current teacher as well as in the MAT@USC.
Prior to becoming a middle and upper school history teacher, I worked in TV production for a major cable network in NYC. Usually when I mention this to my students, they ask me why I left a seemingly glamorous career, in a big city no less, to become (and here they tend to look at me as if I’m crazy) a history teacher in Puerto Rico, where I was born and raised. I always respond with the truth – I left my prior job to find a meaningful career, and in the process, I discovered the place where I was always meant to be: the classroom.
My first year as a full-time teacher was the 2008-09 academic school year, and the experience was life-changing. Not only was I back on the island I’ve always called home, but I was invigorated by the challenge of teaching middle school. However, I quickly realized that I needed concrete and practical tools to help me become an effective educator. Enter the MAT@USC.
I chose the MAT@USC because I love my job. I needed a program that was flexible to my schedule, but that was associated with an institution I trust and respect. I am now halfway through the program and it has not only changed me as a teacher, but as a professional in general. This is due at least partially to the conversations I’ve enjoyed in class.
As a Hispanic woman living in a US-associated Hispanic country, I believe I have a unique perspective in the program. I also happen to teach at an elite private school, which offers a stark contrast to the traditional public schooling in PR. You’ll hear more about this later!
I look forward to continue the conversation and, as always, FIGHT ON!
