Jacquelyn is the oldest of four who grew up in New Canaan, CT. She graduated New Canaan High school in 2003 and then went on to attended Villanova University where she graduated with a major in liberal arts in 2007. Jacquelyn wound up in New York City after receiving a job offer to work at Sotheby’s Art Auction house in Manhattan. Although she enjoyed her job, her passion to work with children was always on her mind having her wish she was a teacher! Jacquelyn has a dog that is the love of her life and they enjoy walking in Central Park together every night.
Why did you want to become a teacher?
I was inspired to teach after I worked at a school in Harlem, NY doing fundraising and volunteer work. I was able to see firsthand the impact a teacher can have on students. I want to make a difference in the lives of children in need, be a person of guidance and to help them learn in a caring and safe environment.
Why did you chose the MAT@USC?
I choose the MAT@USC because it was a way to stay near my family and roots while still receiving a top education in teaching. This program focused on urban education which was important as I am living in an urban area. I felt I could one day use the knowledge I have gained and make a difference in someone’s life! I love traveling and this program gave me the means to be able to pick up as I felt and go places not many students would be able to: I attended class from Spain, China, Hong Kong, Japan, Connecticut, New York, Florida, and California! I never missed a class! There is nothing else like this in the world, and that’s how I knew it was for me.
What is the most valuable learning experience you are taking away from the program?
The most valuable learning experience I am taking away with me is that a teacher must first form a strong relationship with their students to be able to transform learner’s minds. With trust, caring, and perseverance you can help each student reach their own individual best!
What are your future teaching plans?
I want to teach in the high needs neighborhoods in New York City because of my love for children and making a difference in my urban community. They are the ones I feel need someone to show them they believe in them and hopefully in September I will be that person to a classroom full of students.
