I always knew I wanted to be a teacher.  I came from a family of teachers and upon entering college I was highly encouraged to pursue a degree in education.  I took a different path during college and the idea of being a teacher was left behind.  As I struggled through a few different career paths I kept thinking about the idea of being a teacher.  Since I was working full time and had four children, I needed a program that was respectable in the industry while providing the flexibility necessary to keep my life in order.  The renowned MAT@USC offered the perfect combination of flexibility and challenge.  I had the opportunity to gain a masters degree while fulfilling the necessary requirements to become a licensed teacher.  The program is marked by a commitment to utilize technology effectively and I’m amazed at the quality of the online platform that has been built.  Most of the time, I forget that I’m not in a real classroom.

The course work has been invigorating.  I have been extremely impressed with quality of instruction we have received from our professors.  Many of our professors are actively publishing in educational research journals while possessing authentic classroom teaching experience.  The program has helped me grasp the essential concepts of how students learn, while wrestling with the realities of urban education in America today.  I feel confident that this program has given me the necessary skills to be successful as a teacher.

I have a huge passion for math and I long to see students acquire that same passion.  As I finish my degree I will be seeking “high need” positions where I can become a part of a community that is looking to grow.  While some teachers seek positions in top schools, I am committed to work with the students that need the most help and the schools that want to become great.  I can see that America (and the world) desperately needs quality teachers to answer the call and serve in challenging areas.  I am now prepared to serve those who most need it.
