Julie Butler

I have 16 years of classroom teaching experience and hold single subject credentials in health, physical education, biology, and Earth and physical Science. I have worked in online education for the past 4 years as a teacher and an administrator, as well as, 10 years as a classroom teacher in LBUSD in grades 5-12. During my time in Long Beach I have served as department chair, served as a BTSA coach, trained extensively in differentiated instruction and was a member of the LBUSD High School Council. In online instruction I have had the opportunity to work with a very diverse group of young men and women and have aligned curriculum to state standards in 14 states. My first introduction to online learning was in 2006 when I received a grant from the Earthwatch Institute to teach live from the field. The study’s focus was sustainable forestry in the Puerto Rican rainforest.

My passion is health and the human body and I am currently a PhD student in the field of public health in which my focus is childhood obesity. I am also interested in teen issues and write curriculum for mentoring groups for inner city youth through the Long Beach Department of Health and Human Services.
