Mónica Vásquez Neshyba
A current doctoral candidate in bilingual and bicultural education at UT Austin, Mónica Vásquez Neshyba has been involved in education for over a decade in various roles, including bilingual (Spanish/English) elementary teacher, bilingual curriculum coordinator, and English as a second language/sheltered instruction strategist for central Texas school districts. She has also served as a program specialist for the Texas Education Agency in the Division of Student Assessment – Department of English Language Learners. She received her B.A. in Spanish from UT Austin in 1999 and a M.Ed. in Elementary Education from Texas State University in 2001. She has presented at various local, state and national conferences. Mónica is currently completing her dissertation that focuses on how a mariachi class can serve as a conduit for students’ expression of identity and hopes to continue to research the value of the classroom as a cultural
space.
