Steven McCarthy

My name is Dr. Steven J. McCarthy. I have taught theatre in elementary schools through senior high schools with Los Angeles Unified School District for many years. I have also worked professionally in the arts with students of all ages. I have a vast knowledge of all art forms and have been involved in arts integration not only with LAUSD, but also with the LA County Office of Education, as well as on a state and national level.

Currently, I am the Secondary Arts Coordinator for the Arts Education Branch with Los Angeles Unified School District. I have previously served as both Secondary Theatre Expert and Elementary Theatre Specialist with the Arts Education Branch. I now oversee all arts programming for all middle, senior high, continuation, alternative, virtual, and secondary special education schools for the entire school district.

I hold a PhD in Theatre – Critical Analysis from Oxford International University – Bircham College, a PhD in Metaphysics (Ministerial Credential) from the American College of Metaphysical Studies, an MFA in Performing Arts Management from CUNY’s Brooklyn College, and a BA in Speech, Communications & Theatre Arts/Business Administration with a minor in Spanish from Baldwin Wallace College. I hold a California Clear Administrative Credential in Education from CSUN, as well as a California Clear Single Subject Credential in English (CLAAD) with a Subject Matter Authorization in Business, and a California Clear Multiple Subject Credential (CLAAD). Prior to my arts education administrative career, in addition to being a theatre teacher, I was and still am a professional actor, writer, director and producer in both theatre and film. I have served on the Boards of Directors of CETA (California Educational Theatre Association), Los Angeles Opera under the direction of Maestro Placido Domingo, and AHF (AIDS Healthcare Foundation), the world’s largest non-profit healthcare provider for people living with HIV/AIDS. Additionally, I have taught online for UCLA and have been a mentor in the PhD program at Cal State LA.
