What does Professor Julie Slayton love about the MAT@USC?

Julie Slayton MAT@USCWhat do I love about the MAT@USC? I love that I have the opportunity to work with amazing students both on campus and online. I love their intelligence, their enthusiasm, their inquisitiveness, and their passion to serve our children. I love what they teach me every day. I love that they challenge my thinking and push me to be the best I can be in the classroom. I love that my students hail from all over the United States and from far reaches of the globe, that they bring who they are into my classroom, and that they honor me by sharing their uniqueness with me. I love that I have the privilege of spending a few hours with them each week and that I am fortunate enough to be a part of their development as future teachers or work with them on their journey to improve their practice as capstone teachers.

What do I love about the MAT@USC? I love that I have the opportunity to work with an amazing group of likeminded faculty, on campus and online, who share my enthusiasm and passion for teaching our candidates. I love what they teach me every day. I love that they challenge my thinking and push me to be the best that I can be in the classroom. I love that they hail from all across the United States and that they bring who they are to our program. I love that they honor me by sharing their uniqueness with me. I love that I have the privilege of spending time with them as we forge ahead into new and uncharted territory in the development of large numbers of excellent novice teachers and powerful capstone graduates.

What do I love about the MAT@USC? I love that I have the opportunity to work with an amazing  staff, on campus and online, who share my enthusiasm and passion for our candidates. I love that we work together to create alternative spaces within which we and our candidates are able to construct new knowledge and deeper understanding.  I love that they hail from all across the United States and that they bring who they are to our program. I love that they share their matchless energy to and commitment in their work. I love that I have the opportunity to work with and learn from them as we journey forward and push against the limits of our capacity to create new environments for learning.

What do I love about the MAT@USC? I love that the LMS affords us this opportunity to work with candidates and peers right here in our geographic region as well as from all around the world. I love that sit in sunny California (sorry everyone on the East Coast and in the Midwest) and watch the snow outside the window of my student in Connecticut. I love that I have to learn the state standards for candidates outside of my region so that I can connect to the lived experiences of my students. I love that my students can upload their teaching onto the LMS so that I can see them in action. I love that the LMS affords me the opportunity to connect to my students in new and different ways that I had never imagined in my wildest dreams. I love that I have been surprised in the power of the connection that can be created in a virtual classroom. I love the way the LMS has challenged me to become a better teacher, to be present in my teaching, to learn to multi-task in ways I never imagined possible, and to grow intellectually and professionally.

These are a few of the things that I love about the MAT@USC.

Professor, what exactly do you offer in terms of Clinical Education? Which degrees are part of this? Thanks.

MAT@USC educators, such as Professor Julie Slayton, are the most responsive, accessible, and reflective teachers I have ever encountered. Ensuring the intellectual growth of each student is unquestionably their priority. Though they are notably published and sought after trail blazers in their field, there are no ivory towers (real or virtual) here–MAT@USC professors know their students, which is how we are able to learn so much.

    Julie, we love you, too!

Thank you. Can you please clarify how Clinical Education is related to the MAT? This is a field I am pursuing. Thanks!
